Prof Hari Om
The people of Jammu have a well-founded complaint: We have been suffering for the sins committed by Kashmiri leadership and politics of separation in Kashmir, which is based on religious fanaticism. They have been saying again and again that Kashmiri leadership creates problems for the nation by their soft-approach towards separatists and terrorists or by hobnobbing with them and promoting and shielding them and by furthering the Pakistani cause overtly or covertly. It’s their politics of subversion and Valley-centric politics that left the Central Government with no other option but to intervene and bring the state under its direct control. Their view is well-founded and just can’t be brushed aside and dismissed as silly and preposterous.A peep into the political history of J&K post-1947 shows that the people of J&K are right and they have suffered because of the politics and leadership, Kashmir-type. It will also show that J&K remain under the Central rule a number of times, particularly since 1977 because of the follies of the Kashmiri leadership.A reference to just two would be in order. 1. J&K remained under the Governor/President Rule between January 19, 1990 and October 9, 1996. The people of Jammu province were not responsible. The wholesale rigging of the 1987 assembly elections by the Congress-supported National Conference was responsible for the rise of an extreme form of secessionism, violence, attacks on the symbols of the Indian state and members of the miniscule minority of Hindus and breakdown of the constitutional machinery. Such was the situation that Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah dissolved the assembly on January 19, 1990 and fled away to London and the whole Hindu community quit Kashmir to save their religion, culture and honour and escape their physical liquidation. Instead of acting against Farooq Abdullah and radical Islamists and defending the minority Hindus, the Union Government watched the dance of death and destruction as a mute spectator. In the process, the people of Jammu denied the opportunity to be administered by their own representatives for almost seven years.
