DOST KHAN / ANCHOR
JAMMU: She is neither a Chief Minister nor is she holding any constitutional position in the government, either in Jammu and Kashmir or at the Centre. Even if she would have been a Chief Minister, still Mehbooba Mufti had no locus-standi to discuss subjects beyond her realm. Dealing with foreign countries is an exclusive domain of the Union of India and not a state subject. But Mehbooba seems to be naïve about this constitutional reality. Had it not been so, she would not have embarrassed herself by coming to the rescue of Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and holding his brief.
In the midst of tension brewing between India and Pakistan, especially after the Pulwama terror attack and at the height of hot words being exchanged by the two countries, Mehbooba Mufti came from nowhere to offer her unsolicited suggestion of giving Imran Khan a chance, obviously for holding talks with India.
But in her tweet, the former Chief Minister is not only counseling for the enemy Prime Minister but also attributes motives too to India’s strong reaction against Pakistan. She tweets, “But Pak PM deserves a chance since he has recently taken over. Of course the war rhetoric (in India) has more to do with the impending elections that anything else (sic).”
If Mehbooba Mufti is convinced that the ‘war-rhetoric’ in India has more to do with the impending elections then she should not get disturbed about the imminent dismemberment of Pakistan. She is, as she has been doing since her ouster from the government, playing to the galleries and just to hog headlines in a bid to make herself relevant in Jihadi politics of Kashmir. Her PDP, which has lost face in the Valley after mis-governance of three and half years, is struggling hard to find some space in the Valley.
Mehbooba Mufti is very active on twitter. This has brought about a strange bonhomie between the two arch political rivals-Mehbooba and Omar Abdullah. But thankfully for the latter, Mehbooba has not succeeded to rope in Omar Abdullah in giving New Delhi an unsolicited suggestion over Imran Khan, as she did. They made a common cause just a day before over the alleged insecurity of Kashmiri students across the country. However, this time around they are not on the same page over the offer by Imran Khan. Omar has, on the contrary, preferred to remain non committal over Pakistan offer.
A strong votary of Indo-Pak dialogue, Mehbooba is ignoring the national mood, which is against any engagement with Islamabad till it ends hostility, reins in unbridled armed forces and terrorists, who are mix of the radical Jihadi ideology. In such a scenario, talks with Pakistan will mean adding insult to India’s wounds which are being inflicted in most deceitful manner in Kashmir, its borders and elsewhere in the country. Therefore, the voices of resumption of dialogue, especially emanating from Kashmir are rightly being rejected with the contempt these deserve.
Since Mehbooba Mufti is fond of giving unsolicited advices, she too must show magnanimity of listening to one herself. And, this advice pertains to Kashmir and terrorism. She must understand that Indians too want peace but not at the cost of its bleeding soldiers. They know peace is not going to dawn through dialogue and discussions with Pakistan, a neighbour which former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee had stated can’t be changed. She must also understand that Indians know difference between neighbour and an enemy. Pakistan is an enemy; a reptile, which is vertebrate, has backbones, is completely covered with scales, has the traits of being cold-blooded, produces shelled eggs or bear live young. All snakes of this family are carnivorous and swallow their prey whole. They continue to increase in length throughout their lives and shed their outer layer of skin, usually in one piece beginning at the tip of the snout. Those wanting to get rid of snakes should bear in mind that they don’t vanish by just killing, their heads are required to be crushed and smashed because the poison in snake fang is dangerous even after it dies. Crushing a snake’s head destroys it, rendering it powerless, if not dead.
This time around Indians have resolved to crush the head of snake. The leaders like Mehbooba Mufti better understand this and devise her future political misadventures accordingly.
