There is nothing like ‘necessary’ or ‘unnecessary’ death. Death is death, whether natural or unnatural. In the latter case, the causes are probed and assessments made. However, when spoken in the context of the prevailing health scenario in Jammu, the epicenter of COVID-19, and the facilities available in various hospitals, the intention can be well appreciated. The Financial Commissioner Health and Medical Education has done well to confer with medical specialists of various disciplines in Government Medical College Jammu to review the arrangements for tackling the pandemic challenge as also the routine emergency cases, which keep reporting at the hospitals. It is hoped that the hospital administration will acknowledge the sensitivity and urgency of the situation and put on display the status of the availability of isolation beds in the hospitals with or without oxygen facility and ventilators. The roaster of the doctors and other medical consultancy staff should also be put on display to instill confidence among the patients and their attendants. The COVID spread should not dilute the attention of the medical fraternity towards consultancy of patients other than infected ones. The management has been well advised to strictly follow the treatment protocol and any kind of negligence in this regard will be dealt strictly. One also hopes that the doctors and other staff remain available and take regular rounds in the wards as per the roster prepared. The health services are required to maintain oxygen supplies and medicines for optimal patient care. This is the time when the health institutions must walk the talk instead of making claims and counter-claims. The situation is quite grim and needs compassion towards patient care.
