STATE TIMES SPECIAL REPORT
JAMMU: Soon after the declaration of the Urban Local Bodies (ULB) elections results on Saturday, the State BJP leadership led by its President Ravinder Raina converged at the party headquarters to celebrate the ‘grand’ victory.
The party leaders distributed sweets and bursted crackers to mark the thumping majority in the Jammu Municipal Corporation.
With this unprecedented performance, the party leaders confidence level must have been sky rocketing as they managed to not only retain their vote share but outsmarted arch rival Congress by decimating it completely.
BJP won 212 wards, out of 520 across 10 districts of the Jammu province whereas Congress could manage to win 110 seats in the region.
The mandate given by the voters clearly suggested their preference and if BJP is keen on repeating the same performance during the Lok Sabha polls the party leadership will have to gear up their poll machinery at the earliest.
At the micro level, the party has lost around 300 wards at the hands of rebels and Congress candidates.
On Jammu-Poonch Lok Sabha seat, the BJP has won 137 wards but if 92 seats are subtracted from Jammu district, the party could manage to win 45 seats from Rajouri, Poonch and Samba districts. In case of Udhampur Doda Lok Sabha seat it managed to win 75 seats out of 217.
The hilly districts of Doda, Kishtwar and Ramban the party accounted for only 14 seats, 1 from Kishtwar, 7 from Doda and 6 from Ramban. In Udhampur too the party could win only 14 wards from 41 and in Reasi party won 13 out of 26 wards.
In the coming days the party leadership will have to sit together to chalk out the future strategy for the Lok Sabha polls to ensure better performance at the hustings.
