Rs 50 Cr sanctioned for another MRI machine at SSH
JAMMU: Taking cognizance of the STATE TIMES report ‘Whose fault? GMC’s failure leads to delay in installation of upgraded MRI Machine’ published in its edition dated September 7, the newly appointed Principal GMC Dr Shashi Sudan on Friday issued instructions to Medical Superintendent GMC Jammu and HoD Radiology to install MRI in the hospital urgently. In addition to this, Financial Commissioner Health and Medical Education Atal Dullo has also sanctioned Rs 50 crore for procurement of new MRI machine for the Super Specialty Hospital also. This will help to meet the requirements of SSH to cope with the heavy rush of patients during the COVID pandemic. It will also meet the requirements of various patients of super specialty hospital needing MRI services. The tussle between doctors and the administration over the issue had led to the delay in the installation of the machine at GMC campus while the others vote for the SSH. In the process, the general public of Jammu was suffering. There is only one MRI machine in Jammu province and the patients are getting dates after 3 to 4 monthsFor all the hospitals of Jammu region including the premier Government Medical College and Hospital (GMC&H) and its Associated Hospitals, there is only one MRI Machine. So, the patients are getting dates for three to four months, forcing some of them to go to the open market for MRI scan at higher costs. The patients visiting GMC’s Associated Hospitals like SMGS Hospital, the premier maternity and pediatric hospital of the Jammu region, Super Specialty Hospital, Chest Diseases Hospital, Dental Hospital and Psychiatric Hospital are all dependent on one MRI machine available at GMC hospital. The other upgraded MRI machine was waiting for installation.Daily there is a huge rush for MRI scanning but the existing machine is often found non-functional for one or other reason, compelling the patients to either wait for days together or get the diagnostic investigations at private setups, which costs almost three times the actual cost of MRI.The then Advisor to Governor, Health and Medical Education Department, Vijay Kumar, had directed for procurement of 3-Tesla MRI Machine for GMC Jammu. However, the PrincipalGMC was not able to take decision. The HoD Radio-diagnosis wanted the machine to be installed at GMC at the approved site for the new MRI machine finalised by experts but the Medical Superintendent of GMC was of the view that any modification of the existing structure will be deviation of the initial order for installation of MRI and it will not only be a violation of original orders of the authority but also can threaten the safety of existing structure in GMC hospital. The Medical Superintendent of Super Specialty Hospital was of the opinion that the hospital desperately needs the MRI machine to cater to increasing demand of the aforesaid machine in various specialties.Today, the newly appointed Principal resolved the issue and ordered to install the machine at GMC at an earliest.Sources informed that in absence of upgraded MRI at GMC Jammu, the private players were in benefit as all cases were being referred to them.
