Just a few months back, a former All India United Democratic Front MLA Aminul Islam was released on bail from Assam’s Nagaon jail on sedition and other charges, including circulation of provocative video related to COVID-19 quarantine on social media. Lots like him, booked from time to time on sedition charges are either being bailed out or awaiting judicial dispensation due to delays in framing charges and presenting charge sheets in the courts of law. This puts the prosecution on the back foot and speaks volumes about the investigations against the persons, prima-facie having committed offences in different provisos of law. The delay raises doubts about the investigations or pressures and pulls to go slow on such cases. This is a serious matter involving national security. The lackadaisical attitude of the government in tackling anti-national elements serves as oxygen to law breakers and encourages others to follow the suit. This was hugely witnessed during Shaheen Bagh agitation over the Citizenship Amendment Act where one after another protester crossed the limits by indulging in bash-India campaign. The government does not have learnt lessons from history, which is replete with instances of betrayals by those getting even slightest of rope, instead of taking their cases to logical conclusion. The adage goes that if someone betrays trust; never trust him or her again. The Centre has made many experiments with anti-national elements and all these have backfired. Finding its roots in the glorious past of India, the Narendra Modi government too has failed in walking the talk on key national issues. By making one after another experiment; by trusting one after another, the government has achieved nothing but increase in the bandwagon of seditious elements, who keep nailing and hurting the psyche of the nation. The Centre must draw a lesson from repeated failures of Muhammad Ghori’s invasions against Prithviraj Chauhan and the one last victory against him, courtesy Jaichand. It so happened that Muhammad Ghori invaded from Ghazni, passing through the Khyber in 1191. Prithviraj Chauhan, the valiant Rajput, was the ruler who also had a second Capital at Tarain in today’s Haryana. Many Rajput princes helped Chauhan in this battle and he defeated Ghori 17 times. Each time he was defeated, King Prithviraj Chauhan spared him against the wishes of his whose advisors who would counsel the King to to imprison him. However, Chauhan kept freeing Ghori, quoting the chivalrous Rajput traditions. This syndrome had bailed out Ghori in various invasions earlier. The next year, 1192, Ghori again invaded, bringing an army from Ghazni. Chauhan’s forces met the enemy giving rise to the Second Battle of Tarain, 1192. This time Raja Jaichand Rathod of Kannauj (in UP) did not come to Chauhan’s help. Instead, Jaichand revealed Chauhan’s secret plans to Ghori. Ghori made pre-dawn swoops, against normal rules of fighting, and eventually Chauhan was defeated. He was taken prisoner to Ghazni and was eventually executed.Had Prithviraj treated Ghori as an enemy and not shown magnanimity by sparing his life, the course of Indian history would have been different. The example of Chauhan-Ghori episodes may appear redundant or irrelevant to the obtaining scenario across the country but narrating these incidents is to drive home the point that once trusted should never be trusted again. India must be the only country where traitors get olive branches. In no other country, the traitors are spared or tolerated. This is history. Will the Centre draw any lesson from history? The seditious elements should be tackled like the bull which is caught by horns to keep the animal under controls. The seditious elements, terrorists and anti-nationalists, who are actually worse than the animals, should know that India can’t take their tantrums in stride anymore. They must be made to know that they will have to face the consequences of their wrong doings. Since India is a democracy it can’t do what is being done in Germany against those who point fingers against their national hero. India is governed by the Constitution and its provisions can be implemented only when the government(s) rise above politics and strategic compulsions and treat an anti-national like an anti-national. Once done, it will be difficult during the judicial dispensation to run from the noose of law once foolproof charge-sheets are presented in the courts of law.
