STATE TIMES NEWSJAMMU: District Poonch expressed its gratitude to the District Development Commissioner (DDC) and Director General Department of Youth Services and Sports (DG DYSS) for the sincere efforts to give Poonch much awaited hockey facility of an Astroturf. In a statement issued here, the Chairman of Shaheed Manjit Singh Memorial Hockey Club, Mohd Tariq recalled the contributions of young IAS officer, Rahul Yadav (DDC Poonch) and head of the sports department in the Union Territory, Dr Salim Ur Rehman (DG DYSS) in realising the dream of entire sports fraternity of Poonch, especially those associated with Hockey. “If Poonch can produce international stuff in Volleyball, the day is not far when there will be a boy from the town in Indian hockey team. The Astroturf would certainly change the mindset of the talented stuff of Poonch and help the game achieve new milestones. With Astroturf, Poonch has earned a place on the Hockey map of the country,” said Mohd Tariq, a qualified Volleyball coach and runs a training centre in the town. Tariq also mentioned former SAI hockey coach, Sham Lal Sharma for his efforts in promoting the game of hockey in Poonch and also aggressively fighting for the Astroturf. He warned those acting against the Hockey Astroturf and advised the administration to expose such individuals in the interest of the sports. Serving with the DYSS, Tariq asked the Government for improved training facilities for Volleyball also. In the meantime, Sham Lal Hockey Academy also complimented the people of Poonch for the achievement and expressed thanks to the DDC Poonch and DG DYSS for making the hockey players dream come true. Earlier, the foundation stone for the modern Astroturf was laid by Lt. Governor, GC Murmu in the presence of hockey lovers and prominent citizens of the district.
