STATE TIMES NEWS JAMMU: J&K Pollution Control Board (PCB) on Saturday launched major crackdown against polythene and seized about 18 metric tons of banned polythene including disposable items. In a major breakthrough, J&K PCB seized massive quantities of banned polythene carry bags and single-use disposable items made of non-biodegradable material by raiding the premises of a factory involved in the manufacturing of the same and seized all the material stored in its two godowns in Digiana area of Jammu. On receipt of specific inputs, a team of J&K PCB officials headed by B.M Sharma, Member Secretary and comprising Regional Director Jammu, Dr Syed Nadeem Hussain, Divisional Officer, Jammu (South), A.B Jandial, Divisional Officer Jammu (North), Arshad Nazir Malik and other officials, assisted by staff of Forest Protection Force raided the premises of M/s Classic Packers, Dashmesh Nagar, Digiana Jammu and seized massive quantity of illegal polythene and single use biodegradable disposable items. According to the sources, approximately 18-metric tons of banned material was seized comprising 10 metric ton of single use disposable items and 8 metric ton of banned polythene from the factory premises and its two godowns. The raid which continued till late night on Friday was again resumed on Saturday.
Member Secretary, SPCB when contacted, informed that this was the biggest single catch made by the Board till date and is a major achievement ahead of the upcoming Diwali Festival and also in light of ongoing wedding season, since the stocked material was to be supplied to various banquet halls in Jammu Province. During raid, it came to light that owner of the aforesaid polythene manufacturing unit was illegally selling the polythene of below 50 microns by declaring it as above 50 microns.
It is pertinent to mention that polythene below 50 microns has been banned in J&K vide SRO 45 and single use disposable items made of non-biodegradable items have been banned vide SRO 231.
Member Secretary, PCB stated that this seizure shall act as a deterrent for other persons involved in manufacture, sale and purchase of illegal polythene and banned single use disposable items as no one shall be spared. He further added that J&K SPCB shall continue its crusade against illegal manufacture and sale of banned polythene and non-biodegradable items in the coming months and appealed to the general public to cooperate with PCB in protecting the environment by not using illegal polythene and non-disposable items.
