Dear Editor,The rising number of coronavirus cases has stymied the cry for lifting the lockdown. During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s video conference with the State Chief Ministers, more number of states urged for continuance of lockdown. Lockdown is not a tool that can eliminate the corona pandemic but it has just slowed down the spread of the virus. Nevertheless its continuance is necessary if more number of lives of people have to be saved in a given time. Both the positive and negative impact of the lockdown has been felt. If lockdown is withdrawn, it will fuel the already raising number of cases of infection and deaths. The ripe time for lifting the lockdown will be when the nation becomes totally Covid-19 free. Since the Covid-19 patients are in every nook and corner of the world, even if India becomes Covid-19 free, there is no guarantee that this pandemic will not revisit. India is far better in terms of the number of infectees undergoing treatment now and the number of deaths witnessed so far. But countries like Italy, Spain and US have a large number of cases. Numerous other countries are plagued with this virus more fiercely than India. People can have a sigh of relief only when the whole world becomes Covid-19 free. It is beyond imagination that all the countries become covid free at the same time, as it will be amiracle. In the present situation, people should follow precautionary measures to combat the deadly virus.K.V. Seeharamaiah,Karnataka.
