JAMMU: Department of Legal Metrology on Tuesday booked seven traders for using defective weighing scales, non-production of certificates and for not marking mandatory declarations like maximum retail price, packing date, net weight, etc.
On the instructions of Secretary to Government, CAPD cum Controller Legal Metrology Satesh Nehru, two teams of the officers of the department conducted extensive checking of traders dealing with selling of meat, sweets, poultry farms and other traders dealing with sale of items of daily use of the consumers.
The teams inspected 27 traders in Jammu City, Bantalab, Bakshi Nagar, B.C Road, Amphalla and Janipur areas, out of which seven were found to be violating the laws and thus booked under the relevant provisions of law enforced for the purpose. Two poultry farms, one meat seller, one sweet seller, two vegetable and fruit sellers were among seven booked for using defective weighing scales, non production of certificates and for not marking mandatory declarations like maximum retail price, packing date, net weight for the information of consumers.
Three traders were fined in the spot for a sum of Rs 2,200 and notices were served to remaining four traders to showcase why the legal proceedings under the Act may not be initiated against them in appropriate Court of Law.
The department has instructed all the trading persons to prominently display all the prices and use only certified weighing instruments so that consumers can get the accurate quantity for which they have made payments.
