STATE TIMES NEWS JAMMU: The oldest cremation ground of the Jammu City on the banks of Surya Putri Tawi at Jogi Gate is in shambles right now due to pathetic approach and policies of Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC). Being the most preferred one in the City of Temples, this cremation ground should have been well kempt but the present JMC administration has turned it into a dumping site of Malba.
Sometimes back, the Corporation decided and demolished the pyre sight along with sitting shed to make way for a new infrastructure. A temporary pyre shed was constructed farther away from the old one but in between allegations of undue favour to one contractor emerged and a court stay stalled the entire process. Right now the situation is that even the shed for standing is unavailable, leave alone the sitting place. As a consequence old, sick and even young ones are made to stand in rain and sultry hot weather in the open. More so no water is available in the whole premises to wash hands and face as part of Hindu rituals. With Malba dumped around and on way to temporary pyre shed, there is every apprehension of someone slipping and getting hurt.
JMC follies don’t stop here. As in the past, when almost rupees one crore of tax payers’ money was wasted on electric crematorium which never worked, no accountability was fixed at that time and it seems even no lessons have been learnt from the past. Now the idea of making shops along the road side has been mooted and even construction started without keeping in mind congestion due to the parking on the main road at that point as well as sentiments of public attached to this place. Making money out of cremation ground is the only motto of JMC, it seems right now. It is also being alleged that the management intends to rent out the hall for running a gym.
On objections raised by Sewa Samiti construction of shops has been stopped but opening of gym is very much in the plan as allegedly hefty amount has exchanged the hands. With still no plan to stop sewage in flow in the Tawi near cremation ground to improve ambience and facilities, JMC has destroyed whatever infrastructure is available.
