Ishan Sethi, Businessman: We are debating who could be the Hindu Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. It is good to have a Chief Minister from Jammu this time, but without being a full-fledged State empowered with federal sovereignty and constitutional powers under the State, it might be almost impossible for any Chief Minister to govern. However, when I see across, some prominent names for the top slot come to my mind, which are Dr. Jitendra Singh, Dr. Nirmal Singh, Sham Lal Sharma, Harshdev Singh, Devender Singh Rana and Raman Bhalla. We have seen the working of all these Jammu based leaders in different capacities in the past. When I analyze all of them in terms of their approachability, dynamism, political intellect, vision, administrative acumen, integrity, understanding of the issues facing the UT, I found Devender Singh Rana as the best suited candidate as Hindu CM amongst these leaders. He has all qualities which a leader should have and moreover he is a man with secular credentials and the need of the hour is to strengthen the secular fabric. This is my personal opinion and many others may not agree with it.
Anshu Sharma, student leader Cluster University Jammu: Behind the call for a Hindu Chief Minister is a sense of neglect that the community has felt over the decades. It is also about asserting that the Hindus are an important part of the Union Territory. No non-Muslim has ever become a CM of erstwhile State. Moreover, in 1983, when Hindus won majority of seats on the Congress ticket from Jammu, the party chose Moulvi Iftikhar Hussain Ansari, the only Muslim who won from the Valley on the party ticket, as its leader. There has been a demand for a long time that there should be a Hindu CM in Jammu & Kashmir. But it has all along been a Kashmir centric CM from the majority community. The people of Jammu are feeling discriminated against for decades.A young Dogra leader, who knows the problem of youth of Jammu should be given the chance this time to be elected as CM.
Parteek Raina, Student: Jammu and Kashmir State turned Union Territory always got a Chief Minister from the majority community during the past over seven decades. In the last elections, there was a chance of getting a Hindu CM from the BJP but due to majority and more seats in Kashmir as compared to Jammu, PDP took the command by joining hands with BJP. However, there was a solace to have for the first time ever a BJP Deputy CM.There is a need of a Hindu CM in Jammu and Kashmir who steers Jammu towards development which never happened in the past 70 years due to Kashmir centric politics in the erstwhile State. They always focussed on developing Kashmir region and Jammu got ignored on all fronts.
Advocate Avek Pal Singh, J&K High Court Jammu has always suffered at the hands of Kashmiri centric politics. Now BJP is claiming that they will appoint the next CM from Jammu. Even local BJP senior leaders have started announcing that the next CM of J&K will be a Hindu. This is vote politics.Instead, the BJP leaders should first of all fulfill the demands of Jammu residents. Jammu province has always been deprived of many development projects. Even our Universities have not all the courses in comparison to Kashmir University. I have no name among the BJP leaders to be the next CM of J&K.
