With the debate, ‘Jammu must have a Hindu CM, but who?, entering into an interesting stage, involving cream of the society, there is clarity on the choice. Whosoever he may be but the future Chief Minister of J&K should be a Hindu-this is a common refrain.
Monish Chopra, Advocate J&K High Court, Jammu: There is no bar under the Constitution for a person of any religion for the coveted post of Chief Minister, then why not a Hindu CM in J&K. Our country is governed by rule of law and within the framework of the Constitution, a Hindu or anybody from any religion can become CM of J&K. If viewing from a minority angle, even then there are examples where a person from a minority community in a particular State has become its CM. In the present scenario my personal opinion is Dr. Jitendra Singh will be best suited for the post. We are seeing him doing tremendous work for the development of his constituency as MP and if he becomes CM of J&K, he can be a great asset for development of the region. In fact, J&K should be given the status of Statehood back, otherwise, it would be shrouded in powerlessness in many aspects because of various Union Territory limitations.
Dheeraj Sharma, student: Hindu or Muslim, BJP or NC , PDP or Congress or any other political party it does not matter, but the Chief Minister should be from Jammu province this time. No doubt people of Jammu have suffered a lot due to Kashmir Centric politics where the Kashmir based leaders were inclined much towards development in Kashmir province compared to this side of the tunnel (Jammu). I personally feel that the Chief Minister from Jammu should be a face who must be highly educated, approachable to the general public, honest, visionary, futuristic one, who will work for the development of the UT in all spheres which has impact on each and every soul and above all must be a secular man. When I look for these qualities in a Jammu based leader the name first comes to my mind is Devender Singh Rana, who being a secular, dynamic, highly educated, visionary and development oriented is the one who is well aware of the situations and challenges in both the regions can be the best choice.
Vishal Gupta, Secretary Janta Dal (United): First of all there needs to be an election and since it’s a UT now, we need to be more responsible before we elect someone to be our representative. It does not matter whether he is a Hindu or a Muslim but he should be willing to work for the development and serve people. I think it’s time people should give a chance to new candidates.Previous leaders have done nothing and I think we should give new leaders a chance.
Amit Heera, Social Activist Katra: As per the aspiration of Jammuites, who are facing discrimination in every sphere since 1947 after independence, J&K has never ever had any Hindu or a strong leader from Jammu as Chief Minister. I believe there is a need for a capable and honest CM for J&K who tends to work only for the betterment of the people. Former MLA Marh Chaudhary Sukhnandan emerges as the best choice for the post of Hindu CM. He is very down to earth and loyal to his people. He always stood for the welfare of general public and there is no doubt in saying that he is the “Bold Voice of Jammu”. Other than him is Kavinder Gupta, who has RSS background which makes him down to earth personality. He has proven his worth by running the State Assembly as a Speaker of J&K Legislative Assembly during 2015-2018.
