JAMMU: Jammu is simmering with anger over abduction of a minor girl by a Rohingya youth-an act of crime, which is ringing alarm bells in this winter capital of the sensitive and terror hit Jammu and Kashmir. This is yet another act, involving the illegal immigrants, scattered across the temple city, becoming a perpetual source of threat for peace loving citizens. The concern of Jammu people is genuine, so is their resentment against the BJP that has nurtured and virtually supported the so-called refugees to use them as canon of fodder during elections to garner votes by exploiting Hindu sentiment.
When out of power, the BJP used Rohingyas to the hilt by crying hoarse over their influx and blaming the Congress in general and its leader Raman Bhalla in particular for rehabilitating them in the city. The wild charges lost steam when the BJP’s Deputy Chief Minister Dr Nirmal Singh, holding the portfolio of Housing and Urban Development, ordered immediate removal of hoardings, seeking deportation of Rohingyas, put in by the Panthers Party after due permission sought by Harsh Dev Singh from Jammu Municipal Corporation. The act was seen as worst kind of sycophancy and treachery by the BJP to appease Kashmir centric PDP for remaining in the coalition government and sharing the loaves of power. The then Dy Chief Minister complied the diktat because the then Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti desired so, notwithstanding the fact that the Panthers Party had deposited the requisite fee with the JMC for displaying hoardings. Didn’t Jammu BJP find it appropriate then to make a common plank with the PDP and other pseudo seculars to create obstacles in freeing Jammu from Rohingyas?
While the Jammu BJP generated euphoria over illegal settlement of Rohingyas prior to coalition with the PDP, it took U-turn post formation of the government by supplementing the concessions by continuing water, power and other essential services besides engaging many of them through contractual mode for upkeep of civic amenities in the Jammu City. Didn’t they gave respectability to them and a reason also to put stay in Jammu?
In a way, the Jammu BJP remained a mute spectator and facilitator in the provision of reported Aadhaar cards to Rohingyas since the ambitious programme had been launched by Narendra Modi led government at the Centre. This became possible despite the then Union Minister Kiren Rijiju informing Parliament that highest number of these illegal settlers, some of them involved in illegal activities, have made Jammu and Kashmir their abode (say Jammu). The euphoric BJP leaders kept mum.
Also, instead of seeking answers to the circumstances leading to influx of Rohingyas into Jammu after sitting on the hot seat of power, the BJP tacitly became facilitator to annihilation of the religio-cultural character of Jammu by willingly playing second-fiddle role to please pseudo-secular leaders from the Valley. They ought to have got a probe ordered into the role of some actors from Kashmir, who motivated Rohingyas to make Jammu their home, not the Valley. Remember what a Rohingya religious cleric Molvi Yunus had told a national news agency then, “I crossed into Bangladesh from Burma (Myanmar) when persecution of Muslims became unbearable. From Calcutta I shifted with my family to Delhi where I begged for food to keep myself and my family alive. It was in Delhi that I met a Kashmiri who told me J&K was a state in India where Muslims lived in majority”.
Who was this Kashmiri? Why did he motivate them to come over to Jammu and Kashmir-precisely Jammu and not the Valley? The Jammu BJP should have sought answers to these riddles. But, self styled Messiahs of Jammu preferred to put the deportation of Rohingyas into backburner, despite Jammuites expressing apprehensions and taking to streets, demanding their deportation along with illegally settled Bangladeshis. Had the BJP been in the opposition, a major row would have erupted but nothing of the sort happened because its leaders have developed a vested interest in keeping the issue boiling. Presence of Rohingyas is like oxygen for the Jammu BJP, which has miserably failed on governance front during their brief spell of power. They actually want to sustain the issue of Rohingyas for exploiting it to hilt during elections to garner votes. Such issues serve like shield to the failures, as also the acts of omissions and commission of many Jammu BJP leaders.
