Rape of 19-yr-old girl by 18 rapists
JAMMU: The wheels of justice seem to have ‘abruptly’ stopped in Jammu and Kashmir. Last year NGOs, mainstream politicians, separatists, cabinet ministers and Kashmir media had descended on the nondescript Rasana village of Kathua district to report the story of alleged rape and murder case of an eight years old girl. They had created ripples across the nation. The politicians had politicised the gruesome act to garner more votes. The police, under pressure from the political bosses, too had moved swiftly in collecting the circumstantial evidences and framed charges against eight accused in the case, which is being heard in a Pathankot court.
Now, almost one year later, another case of ‘gang rape’ has come to light from Hiranagar tehsil of Kathua district but so far no major headway has been achieved. Four days after the registration of FIR, at the behest of local court, the police is yet to get its act together and arrest all the 18 accused, 15 named in the FIR while three others identifiable. The perpetrators of heinous act of sexual violence against the 19-year -old girl are 18 rapists of her community and probably the caste equation is preventing everyone from seeking justice for the poor victim in this case. Ironically, even the FIR has been booked in the case after the intervention of the local court. Strangely, no politician from the Kashmir valley has spared enough time to pen down a single line tweet or share serious concern. Former Chief Ministers Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah are maintaining ‘stoic’ silence in the matter. No ‘Gujjar’ activist like Talib Hussain has surfaced bare foot on the streets to lead protest demonstrations.
The state police too is struggling to act against the 18 accused.
Media persons from Kashmir, who had converged in Rasana are yet to take note of the sexual assault on the 19-year-old girl by 18 men, accused in the case.
According to FIR (13/19), a couple hailing from Kore Kasba area of Hiranagar tehsil was abducted from the residence of a close relative on January 4, 2019 at around 5.30 PM by 18 accused. According to the FIR, the accused kept the couple in unlawful custody and confinement. After three days they released husband of the gang-rape victim and shifted her to another location by wrapping her face. Later the accused committed rape upon her repeatedly and kept her transporting from one location to another. On January 17, she appeared before the court and narrated her ordeal. The court directed the police to register case against all the 18 accused persons and investigate the matter.
