JAMMU: To mark the International Day for Persons with Disability, a series of events were organised by the Department of Special Education, MIER College in collaboration with the Inclusive School, Model Academy. Parents of students with disabilities in the Inclusive School were invited for the event.
Dr. Rohnika Sharma, HoD UG Department deliberated on the ‘Rights of Person with Disabilities Act, 2016’ and explained various rights of students with disabilities.
The programme began with the powerpoint presentation by Kuldeep Singh, Assistant Professor, UG Department MIER College on the activities that are been conducted in the Inclusive Schoolas a part of the curriculum with the purpose of creating awareness among the parents.
This was followed by a striking dance performance by the students of Inclusive School. A poem title Dharti Gole was recited by the students of the inclusive school: Master Pranav, Kanishk, Aditya and Ansh Sharma. A captivating acting performance was given by Master Dikshant Sharma.
At the end a token gift was given to all the participants.
Posters made by special education students were exhibited on this year’s theme ‘Empowering students with disabilities and ensuring inclusiveness and equality’ which was inaugurated by Dr. Renu Gupta, Vice Chairperson MIER. The display was greatly appreciated by faculty members and students of the college. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Renu Gupta, Vice Chairperson MIER said that the journey towards becoming an inclusive school has been challenging but very rewarding and satisfying and further added that MIER’s inclusive initiative has touched many families and provided hope for many others.
Dr. Gupta emphasised that inclusive education is to make schools as centers of learning and educational systems caring, nurturing, and supportive where the needs of all students are met in a true sense, which is the need of the hour.
A formal vote of thanks was presented by Kuldeep Singh, Assistant Professor UG Department MIER College.
Dr. Adit Gupta, Director and Principal MIER College appreciated the efforts of inclusive school-Model Academy and the Department of Special Education and added that such activities are needed to create and generate empathy towards children with exceptionalities.
