As things are changing with lightning speed in the newly carved out Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir with people at times finding it difficult to cope up with fast changing strides of the administration which is more than active in transforming the developmental scenario by synergizing all the available resources and motivating the helmsmen to do a bit more than their capacity to ensure public welfare. In the very same context the people were finding it hard to get domicile certificates as the number of people demanding this document outnumbered the officials deputed for the service. Though, online facility was also announced and applications are also being received for disbursement of aforesaid certificates but again due to ‘some’ hiccups, the online system couldn’t get streamlined and people are forced to horde at respective revenue offices to apply for domiciles. All this is happening despite imposition of strict social distancing norms and other precautions to stop spread of coronavirus thus making situation precarious as far as disease spread is concerned. Those desirous of getting the domicile certificates at the earliest due to constraints like applying for jobs or for educational purposes are the worst sufferers as they have no other option but to visit their respective revenue offices to fetch their domiciles, the ordeal which has no comparison. Although, various social, political and student organisations have time and again demanded that the Permanent Resident Certificates should be considered at par with domiciles (quite reasonable demand) but the government didn’t pay any heed and continued with the process making it mandatory for residents to attain domicile certificates to prove their residency in all future matters. The hardship of people though has not gone unnoticed and administration of Jammu district has come up with a people-friendly initiative to provide domicile certificates to residents at their doorsteps. This service has been initiated in three tehsils but soon the same will be augmented and other tehsils will also get the benefit. The innovative step has been taken in Jammu West, Nagrota and Dansal tehsils with people getting their domiciles on the spot. This service besides others is a testimony to the fact that government is concerned over the plight of people and showing restlessness and hurry in such matters is not at all required rather people should have faith in government that whatever is in offing is good for J&K in general and Jammu in particular.
