Who knows when the series of tremors although of low to medium intensity which are lately occurring frequently in the entire northern belt of India including J&K will take a perilous turn and bring in major catastrophe in the form of high intensity earthquake? The point to ponder is whether the newly carved out union territory of J&K is effectively prepared to handle the situation if tremor of magnitude 8 or above hits the region as many geologists have opined looking into the susceptibility of the aforesaid due to the reason that UT falls in Seismic Zone V, which is considered as the most vulnerable? The tremor which jolted erstwhile J&K State in 2005 leading to colossal loss of lives and property as the government was unprepared at that time gave a chance to the helmsmen to learn a lesson but are we ready for any such vagary of nature is a big question under the circumstances when tremors are jolting places within and outside UT on regular basis. The latest quake which the UT witnessed was on Tuesday measured to be 4.0 on Richter scale. Though, no reports of any loss of lives or damage to property were received but surely this could be considered as warning of a big catastrophe which may confront in the near future. Today itself earthquake measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale, centred 63 Km southwest of the millennium city of Gurugram in Haryana, shook the National Capital Region (NCR) thus calling for immediate measures to start the trail of awareness drives in the entire region especially in J&K UT which witnessed three tremors in the last one month. Besides, educating the populace about possible precautions and SOPs to save life and property, there is a dire need to loin girds against any possible high intensity quake which is likely to happen in near future if the experts in the field are to be believed. Though UT administration is preoccupied since its inception after the bifurcation of J&K State and the COVID-19 outbreak but accomplishing the needful in this direction is also quite imperative as far as safety of residents from such kind of seismic activity is concerned. As no concrete technology is available to predict earthquakes therefore edifice, information and awareness can collectively play a vital role in preventing devastation in terms of life and property.
