It was for the first time the dark side of the growing drug menace came in prominence after Pak-trained terrorists attacked Pathankot air base in Punjab in 2016. It was not the biggest revelations that shook the world. The malady got the patronage during the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) combo’s rule. Today also the menace is there but the size of the business has enlarged with drug cartel using drone for transporting drugs across the border to escape security agencies manning the stretch. The residual effect was felt in Jammu also. The seizure of narcotics of various types and in quantity has become a regular feature. Most of the narcotics smuggled were for domestic consumption and large quantity was meant for inter-state trade with Punjab becoming the main transit point. Narco terrorism has become one of the country’s main enemy. “Every mother, especially every mother of Punjab today is worried that her son may get addicted,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said during the last election campaign. Modi had even promised voters to put a lid on the drugs being pushed into Indian territory from across the border if BJP-led government came at the Centre. Punjab under Badal’s had announced at that time an elaborate anti-drug drive and crackdown against the drug abuse. Simultaneously, the state government also had announced massive programme of drug de-addiction in the state and free medicines to drug-addicted youths in these centres. Punjab a predominantly rural and close-knit society based on the village as its edifice and the family as the foundation of that has undergone a radical transformation. The rapid march of transport, communication, media and information technology have closed the gap between rural and urban societies. Prosperity spread at a fast pace and farming became a boon leading to surplus money thus creating an ideal state of prosperity taking to the one of the worst resource draining social menace and heading to the pathway of doom. Today also the trans-border drug trade is on without any check except the quantity transacted may be less as compared to earlier time with deviation from the traditional routes.
