Govt doctors use ‘fake sign boards’ to fleece patients
VIVEK SHARMA JAMMU: Making mockery of the system and to befool the innocent poor patients, the junior most doctors of the Health Department, attached to the Government Medical College (GMC) Hospital or Super Specialty Hospital (SSH) are impersonating themselves as consultants. In close vicinity of the GMC and SSH, a doctor has displayed a poster of a private clinic with his name inscribed prominently at the Maheshpura Chowk. Nobody in the GMC has ever taken note of this brazenness which is on display at a public space. When STATE TIMES inquired from the building owner, he put the blame on the doctor, who was recently attached to the SSH in Department of Nephrology. “We know the ‘Consultant’ tag depicted by Dr Raju Bhandari is fake, so we have asked him to get it removed,” said Vijay Bhardwaj, Director of Bhardwaj Agencies and Chemist, adding “If not removed, we are also planning to lodge complaint with police.” Bhardwaj reacted when he spotted STATE TIMES’ camera. This is not an isolated case. In Jammu, most of the attached doctors in GMC pose themselves as Consultants to befool the patients. In most of the crossings, these fake boards are on display. Appointment of Lecturers and Consultants are made by the PSC for Medical Education Department while the doctors appointed by PSC for Health Department manage their attachments in GMCs and fleece the patients. “Doctors appointed in Health Department have to serve in periphery hospitals and far flung areas. However, they manage their posting/attachments in GMCs to fleece patients and earn lot of money,’ said D R Dansih, President Consumers Protection Organisation, adding “As there is no check on their fee, we have taken up the issue many times with the government but there is a strong nexus at play.”
Recently a young boy died in Department of Nephrology as no senior doctor was available during the dialysis process. If the figures are to be believed over a dozen patients have died during the course of dialysis in SSH in Department of Nephrology. Shockingly, the doctors attached in the department of nephrology are busy in their private practice just few meters away from the government hospital.
Dr Raju Bhandari and Dr Amit Kumar from Health Department were attached with the SSH.
“Why concerned officials are sleeping over this brazen violation and fraud?” Asked RTI activist Som Nath Dabgotra, adding,”The poor management and commercialisation has damaged the system in government hospitals.
” Private practice of doctors should be completely banned. This is the only solution otherwise poor patients will continue to suffer,” Dabgotra said, adding “many of the doctors were earlier taken to task for unauthorised absence and working in private hospitals outside the State. Now that they have managed their attachments in GMC and SSH, they concentrate on private practice rather than attending to patients in the hospitals.”
