STATE TIMES NEWSUDHAMPUR: Devika River, held sacred in popular culture, has remained a burning political issue over the last so many years, but in spite of many promises, the river still remains polluted, exposing the tall claims of the administration and political leaders.Addressing media persons here, Praduman Singh, National Conference Co Secretary, Udhampur said that the leaders from different political parties have been politicizing the issue of Devika work project. He said that the Devika project was completed by the administration and Government had spent crores of rupees in 2007. The amount was spent on its beautification as well. “The aforesaid development work carried out in 2007 has been washed even after a couple of months due to minor downpour,” Singh said and added that not even a single political leader uttered anything over the failure of the developmental work.The leaders who were cooking their politics to engulf their share from the Devika work project, Singh said and added that for the last couple of years crores of rupees were released for the same project by the Central government.“Recently the Devika work was handed over to Sewerage Department and it also failed to execute the project,” Singh said, adding that the entire funds released was not spent on the project since it has been wasted on renovation, repair and other works besides work of laying sewerage pipes.Singh said that majority of the lanes and by-lanes in Udhampur have been damaged and contractors have further broken down the lanes to carry out their required work without coordinating with the concerned department especially in Ward No 20.“The condition here is so bad that the department has yet failed to repair and renovate the damaged works, besides the dirt and silt filled water overflowing from Devika irks the residents,” Singh said.“Encroachment could be seen along Devika banks as the government is in deep slumber and the leaders of BJP party visit the areas only to bake their own political loops,” Singh said.The NC leader said that the government should frame a committee to take an overview of the Devika project so that the work would be done in a transparent manner besides removing the encroachment along Devika bank.Singh appealed to the Lt Governor, Manoj Sinha to intervene into the matter and instruct the department accordingly.
