State Times NewsJAMMU: The Jammu and Kashmir Congress on Monday staged a protest against the Centre’s decision to impose property tax in the union territory and demanded its immediate rollback and dismantling of toll plazas to end “tax terrorism”.“The BJP is anti-people and has unleashed tax terrorism in J&K through amendments in various laws after revoking the special status and bifurcating the erstwhile J&K into two union territories on August 5 last year,” chief spokesperson of Pradesh Congress Committee Ravinder Sharma said.A large number of Congress activists led by Senior Vice President Raman Bhalla, Kanta Bhan, Ravinder Sharma, Yogesh Sawhney, Manmohan Singh, Rajnish Sharma, Shiv Dev Singh, Ashok Sharma, Indu Pawar, Ch. Gharu Ram staged the protest outside the party headquarters at Shaheedi Chowk in the heart of Jammu. However, their attempt to march towards the Tawi bridge was scuttled by police who were deployed in strength and had barricaded the main road.“Congress will not remain a mute spectator to the anti-people policies of the BJP-led government. The BJP is anti-farmers, anti-youth and has unleashed the tax terrorism by setting up more toll plazas in Jammu region and cleared the way for imposition of the property tax,” Sharma said.Congress leaders and workers charged BJP of unleashing a Tax terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir amidst worst economic crises in the country apart from COVID-19 crisis and unprecedented price hike.The protestors carried play cards seeking roll back of property Tax decision and other taxes besides immediate restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir without any further delay.He said his party demands rollback of the “anti-people” decisions and immediate restoration of the statehood to Jammu and Kashmir and holding of assembly elections.Similar protest was also held at Katra in District Reasi led by Rajesh Sadotra, President J&K Pradesh Congress Seva Dal.Addressing the gathering Shri Raman Bhalla said that the people are suffering due to the tax regime of BJP which is not less than Tax terrorism. The people face difficulty in meeting both ends during the manifold increase in prices of all commodities.He said that in recent times multiple taxes were imposed or hiked in Jammu and Kashmir including toll Tax, one time road tax and cubs, charging of higher rates of stamp duty besides manifold increase registration fee. The party vehemently opposed fleecing o the common people in name of various taxes and demanded review of the tax regime. Among others who participate include Shashi Sharma, Thomas Khokhar, Zahid Sarfraz Malik, Dr. Rama Kant Khajuria, Rajvir Singh, Gajan Singh, Rashpal Singh Chib, Prem Sharma, Amrit Bali, Uttam Singh, Dewan Chand, Satish Sharma, Kulbushan Sharma, Sushma Choudhary, Bharat Priya, Jasbir Singh, Nasar Masih, Michael Wazir, Ram Magotra, Jatin Vashisht, S.P. Spolia, Sardar Singh, Som Dutt Sharma, Surinder Manhas, Latish Sharma, Sunil Slathia, Pawan Bhagat, Mandeep Singh, Bipan Sharma, Kapoor Lal Dogra, Kewal Krihan, Vijay Khajuria, Channder Sheikhar Sharma, S. Gurmeet Singh, Naresh Sharma, Jatinder Chib, Rakesh Sharma, Sushant Sharma, Harminder Singh and others.Meanwhile, Congress workers led by Senior Congress leader Varun Magotra accompanied by President Congress Army Kirtan Singh, Distt. Mahila President Prabha Salathia, Naresh Maini, Narinder Kour, Meenu Jamwal, Geeta Dogra, Mohinder Singh, Th. Hoshiyar Singh, Yog Raj Singh, Ranjeet Chopra, Varinder Partap Singh, Rahul Tandon, Mannat and others, staged protest at Press Club Jammu against the decision of UT administration for imposing property tax in all municipal limits. Having placards in hands, the protestors lambasted at BJP Government to impose such type of heaving taxes on poor populace of Jammu at this time when the economy got shuttered and people hardly managing their food.Varun Magotra added that if the government won’t take necessary action in the concern, Congress will stage more protests at block and district levels for the benefit of the people.
