Dear Editor,In many places, the coronavirus stay-at-home orders are being lifted and people are returning to work and social events in phases. We as adults may understand the new rules, so it may be easy for us to flip that switch and attempt to return back to normal. But for kids, it may be bit difficult.Children need help grasping the rules of the new normal. We need to make them understand all this by discussing how things are the same and different. It is our duty to make them understand that they can still call friends, ride their bike, hang out with immediate family members, practice their favorite activities and enjoy being outdoors, but with the new rules and guidelines. We should talk to kids about how doctors, parents and leaders are working together to create a plan for people to go out and still stay safe. They should be made to understand that they can resume few of their previous activities but in smaller groups and in different ways, like wearing a mask or staying six feet away from others. We need to teach them that they should wash their hands, try not to touch their face, and wear a mask in public to keep themselves and others safe. We should tell children that wearing masks in public is about being a good and responsible citizen. The most important thing is making them learn wearing a mask. Encouraging children to practice wearing masks for short periods of time at home can help to great extent. Gradually increase the amount of time they are asked to wear their mask so they can get used to wearing it.By following these simple steps and encouraging children to follow the simple guidelines, we can make children learn the new normal and keep them safe.Dr Roshi Mahajan,Channi Himmat.
