JAMMU: The traffic police here in the winter capital of Jammu often penalises matadoor drivers for not using designated stops to pick passengers and also blames them for jamming main traffic routes during peak hours.
At the same time there is no dearth of such bus stops which have either been encroached or covered with concertina wires and mobile carts selling winter clothing.
All this is happening right under the nose of the traffic police but instead of cracking its whip against the willful encroachers they just look to the other side.
Jammu Municipal Corporation have dedicated and renovated several bus stops across the city of temples but majority of them are in disarray.
Very few among them in use are either in need of urgent renovation or have been in use despite poor infrastructure.
Starting from the office of JMC, the stop opposite bus stand is seldom used by the matador drivers to pick passengers and is often occupied by shelter less people.
The bus stop near Vivekananda Chowk is used by a motor cycle repair shop for parking two wheelers. It also doubles up as refreshment counter for local cops as they are seen eating their lunch in a mobile van parked there.
The bus stop at Dogra Chowk is also out of order for a long time. Similarly the main bus stop at Trikuta Nagar crossing opposite Reserve Bank Of India mostly remain occupied with trucks parked in front of the bus stop. The bus stop on Narwal bypass road opposite Gurudwara complex paints a dirty picture as seats there are broken and heaps of garbage paints a dirty image.
The bus stop at Shalimar road remains covered with concertina wire due to imposition of Section 144 in and around Civil Secretariat complex. The bus stop near Ambedkar chowk remains encroached by mobile carts selling woollen clothes in winter and helmets and other routine material during summer season.
