Baru Khajuria, a working woman said, “Abrogation of Article 370 was thought to create most powerful impact for people of Jammu. The biggest issue was equitable development of Jammu at par with Kashmir region. Jammu had high expectations in terms of development and employment. Jammu, due to its weak leadership and Kashmir-centric loyality by central governments, could never see the sun rising towards its horizon. Tourism industry was never promoted thus resulting in limited opportunities for youth to get jobs. Most of the packages announced went to Kashmir and Jammu could never understand why this step motherly treatment was practised with it. Within the regions, be it Ladakh or Jammu, resentment was brewing among masses for equitable share in every sphere. The hope was finally fulfilled, when Article 370 was abandoned. It is now more than a year but nothing substantial has been achieved yet. People want to see changes on ground .Basic amenities are still lacking, with no healthcare no modernisation for Jammu city. Smooth road connectivity is still a distant dream. Jammu continues to be struggling against many things. Abrogation of Article 370 must bring some dynamic changes on ground level, which yet not reached the region.”
Yaser Rashid, Law Student, Jammu University: As we are already aware that prior to abrogation of Article 370, the erstwhile State had a special status. We had combination of three regions, different cultures, different religions and different rituals.“We were living in the best era before abrogation of Article 370 but unfortunately due to the dirty politics of Center’s ruling party, we were betrayed on 5th August 2019, when whole demography of our erstwhile State was changed and it was bifurcated into two Union Territories, against the will of people of all the regions of erstwhile State. No one wants status of UT instead of State but BJP had done wrong and went against will of the people and divided Jammu & Kashmir and its people on region basis. On August 5, 2019 they shunned all voices including mainstream political leaders, activists, students, youth and others. Whole erstwhile State was put under curfew and all communication links were banned. Till date, 4G has not been restored which is our basic right, and now one can easily see the curse of abrogation of Article 370,” he added.
Shruty Sharma, a Homemaker said, “The decision to abrogate Article 370 has perhaps generated more emotions than any other event in recent past. From celebrations to anger, from euphoria to despondency, from pride to humiliation, it has seen a wide spectrum of emotions reflected through millions of conversations on social media. Article 35A, which comes under Article 370, proscribes non-permanent residents of J&K from permanently settling in J&K, buying immovable property, acquiring land, applying for Government jobs or any kind of scholarships, aids as well as other public welfare projects. The people of J&K will now lose these benefits associated with permanent resident certificate. Moreover, as per my view, what has been promised is not being delivered to us.”
