LEH: An untimely flood occurred in Tirisha stream, Nallah, in Nubra Valley on Tuesday causing severe damage to standing crops, cultivable land, many orchards and plantations of village Tirisha.
The link road to Siachen Base Camp has also been reportedly affected badly as a part of the road has been washed away by floods near Tirisha village.
The flash flood is believed to have been caused by glacial lake outburst in the upstream which is technically known as the Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF).
Talking to STATE TIMES, Executive Councillor LAHDC, Leh, Tsering Sangdup, who is also the Councillor of the affected area, said that Tirisha village has received extensive damages due to the flood and damaged land approximately up to a length of three kilometres that includes standing crops, cultivable land and plantations is badly affected. He added that one house has also received some damage.
‘Fortunately, there has not been any casualty. Neither any livestock was lost due to the flood,” Sangdup informed.
Since there has not been record of such a flood in June so, Sangdup suggested that for the risk reduction of such calamities, need of the hour is to study and find out GLOF prone sites so that some precautionary measures can be taken.
According to sources, SDM Nubra and officials from Revenue Department have also visited the flood affected site and accordingly assessments of the damage caused are being processed. However, it might take some time to conclude the assessment of total damages received since a huge portion of the village has been affected. The main link road to Siachen Base Camp continues to remain cut off as the road has been washed away.
