STATE TIMES NEWS UDHAMPUR/RAMBAN: Two drug peddlers were arrested with 27 kilograms of poppy in separate incidents in Udhampur and Ramban districts on Tuesday, police said. Giving details of the incident, a Police spokesman told reporters that during routine Naka checking at Chanderkote Naka point, suspicious movement of a pedestrian carrying a bag was noticed by the Naka party who was immediately signaled to stop. But he instead tried to run away in the opposite direction. On this the alert cops chased the suspect and apprehended him nearby. On search of his bag, poppy straw like substance was recovered which was weighed to be four kilograms. The accused has been identified as Mool Raj, son of Lal Chand, resident of Bajarni Bhagwa Distt Doda. A case vide FIR No. 00/20 under sections 8/15 NDPS Act stands registered at Police Station Chanderkote and investigation taken up to ascertain the backward and forward linkages. During preliminary investigation it has come to notice that he was supposed to sell the contraband in small quantities to the youth of Chanderkote and Ramban areas. Further investigation is in progress. The peddler has been arrested by a team of Police Station Chanderkote headed by Insp Nazir Ahmed SHO Chanderkote under the close supervision of Sanjay Parihar Additional SP Ramban and overall supervision of Haseeb ur Rehman, SSP Ramban. A police party intercepted a Punjab-bound truck on the highway at Chenani belt of Udhampur and recovered 23 kilograms of poppy from the vehicle during a search, the police said. The truck driver, Hardeep Singh, was arrested on the spot and a case was registered in the matter, they said.
