SRINAGAR: Two policemen guarding the Court complex in Pulwama District were killed on Tuesday in a terrorist attack.
The terrorists opened fire at the police picket guarding the District Court complex in Pulwama town in the early hours, a police spokesman said.
He said the cops retaliated the firing. In the ensuing exchange of gunfire, two cops were killed.
Following the incident, the area was cordoned off and further details are awaited.
Reacting to the incident, former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said militants “will only have themselves to blame” if security forces hit them harder than before after the Centre’s peace initiative ends.
On May 16, the Union Government directed security forces not to launch counter-terror operations during Ramzan but said they reserve the right to retaliate if attacked.
“With the militant organisations doing their best to make sure the ceasefire is a failure they will only have themselves to blame if the security forces come back at them even harder when the ceasefire ends,” Abdullah tweeted.
Abdullah said those who killed the policemen in Pulwama “deserve nothing but eternal flames of hell”.
“And that too on the night of Shab-e-Qadr. The killers of these police personnel deserve nothing but the eternal flames of hell & that is where they are destined to find themselves. Condolences to the families of the deceased,” he said on Twitter.
In Anantnag, six Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawans sustained minor injuries in a grenade attack by terrorists.
Shab-e-Qadr (night of power and blessings) is the 27th night of the holy month of Ramzan when Muslims throng mosques to offer nightlong prayers.
Meanwhile, security forces detected and destroyed an IED in Awantipora area of Pulwama District thus averting a major tragedy, police said.
A foot patrol of security forces detected an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted by militants at Kanjinag in the morning, a police official said.
A bomb disposal squad was summoned to the spot and the IED destroyed, he added.
In another terror related incident, five CRPF jawans were injured in a grenade attack by terrorists in Anantnag district early this morning. However, a national news agency put the number of injured at ten.
“Militants hurled a grenade on CRPF party at Janglat Mandi in Anantnag. Five CRPF personnel got minor injuries,” a police spokesman said.
He said all the injured were shifted to hospital for treatment where their condition is stated to be stable.
