JAMMU: Pradeep Dutta, Senior News Editor Times Now presented paper on ‘Kashmir Unrest: Ideological Shift from Azadi to Caliphate’ during lecture-cum-discussion organised by Department of Strategic and Regional Studies here on Thursday.
The session was chaired by Dr Ashok Bhan, former DGP, Vigilance Commissioner, and Patron, IIPA J&K Branch.
Dutta highlighted ideological shift from Kashmir nationalism to caliphate movement. He gave elaborate description of Pakistani design under which Kashmir identity was morphed into sectarian Islamist politics.
Delving deep into the subject, Dutta explained that why 1979 is considered water shed year in Islamic world. He explained that how developments during this period sowed seeds of discontent in modern and moderate Middle East and promoted Salafi Islam. He said in the year 1979 important developments like Iranian revolution, Siege of Mecca, US embracing Wahabi Saudi Arabia to neutralize Shia Iran, Russian invasion of Afghanistan and hanging of then Pakistan Prime Minister Zulfiqar Bhutto led to rise of radicalisation in the region. He explained how over the period of time, Kashmir uprising and the emergence of a more rabid, extreme global Salafi-jihadist movement has made things difficult for security agencies countering terrorism in State? Will this trend gain momentum and alter the course of the secessionist movement?
“Answers to these questions are essential if the Indian authorities are to successfully navigate these treacherous waters in the times ahead,” Dutta concluded.
