SRINAGAR: The State Government has extended the term of School Fee Fixation Committee (SFFC) for one year.
The orders in this regard have been issued by Secretary School Education Department, Farooq Ahmad Shah.
It may be recalled that the two-year term of SFFC headed by Justice (retd) Hakeem Imtiyaz had expired on July 28 this year. The J&K government had constituted the fee committee to regulate the fee structure in schools. “We have extended the term of the existing committee for a period of one year. The committee will remain functional now,” Farooq Ahmad Shah said.
He said the committee has been authorised to keep a check on the functioning of private schools- viz-a-viz setting of fee structure for students in the institutions.”The fee committee has its primary role to keep a check on private schools so that no schools hikes fee structure without seeking formal approval from the committee,” Shah said.
He said the government was not against functioning of private schools but every sector should work under the ambit of government rules.
“We are not against anybody but they (schools) should get proper approval from the committee to hike their fee,” Shah said.
Interestingly, most of the private schools in Kashmir have started inviting admissions for kindergarten classes and are asking for huge amount as donation besides admission fee. Representatives of private schools have already approached the government with a plea to allow them for giving a hike in their fee structure.
It is pertinent to mention that the J&K High Court in 2015 directed the owners of private educational institutions not to increase tuition fee charged from the students.
The court directions were issued after the schools were charging tuition fee from students for September and October months of 2014 when floods hit Kashmir and educational institutes were closed.
