Protests by students is not a new phenomenon, but students of Kashmir are fighting against the Indian Army and the paramilitary forces; looting banks, snatching rifles from the J and K Police, attacking police posts and army camps. Such activities are simply not expected from students. Most locals have already taken to terrorist activities and it seems that they (students too) are well supported by the local people, administration and the police. This is the time when the Central Government must act tough to control the negative sentiments being propagated and followed by J and K students. The political system in the State has been a failure since Independence, be it the PDP or the NC. Politicians along with radical leaders have exploited the local masses for their own agenda – to remain in power and enjoy the fruits that the disturbed State yields. India is fighting at two ends in J and K – Pakistan and the local radicals. The Pakistan threat is not serious, but the local threat now percolating to school students, is really serious.
