The Jammu BJP is a classic example of ’embarrassed cat scratching poles’. After pulling out of the government led by the PDP, the BJP is exerting hard to woo its disgruntled and disenchanted constituency of Jammu. Over a week after losing power, the State BJP leaders, including some erstwhile senior ministers met the Governor and brought to his notice several ‘pressing issues’ for redressal. Ironically these were the issues they ignored during three years of being in the government. Least to get these redressed, they never thought it even prudent to discuss these in public domain. On the contrary, they mocked at those who raised these with hope to seek some consideration, as the BJP had thrived on these issues in its election campaign during 2014 parliamentary and assembly elections.
Among the issues, the BJP urged the Governor to withdraw all the pending cases registered against youth of Jammu during Shri Amarnathji land row agitation. It is hilarious.
Jammu had been a traditional saffron stronghold. From the times of Jana Sangh to its rechristened form, the right wing outfit had significantly succeeded in developing a chord with the people. Jana Sangh or BJP took up at the national level the cause of the region that felt neglected and discriminated by the successive State Governments. It was the only organisation that aligned itself with the suppressed ‘minorities’ which became more pronounced during the 1990 migration when a whole lot of Kashmiri Pandits were made to flee from their homes and hearths. Jammu gave them a shelter and the RSS spearheaded its entire cadre to help them to overcome the unforeseen situation.
The people of Jammu vehemently voted BJP to power to the civic body elections in the aftermath of Shri Amarnathji land row agitation and also mandated the party with whopping 25 members to the Legislative Assembly, thus landing it into the cradle of power with arch rivals PDP in 2015.
The detractors dubbed grand success of the BJP to the manifestation of Amarnath land row agitation. The fact that BJP was enjoying a special place in the hearts of the people cannot be contested. Therefore, the party claiming itself to be a party with difference could have actually made a real difference. They could have been a force to reckon with, had public service been any motivation. On the contrary what BJP did is not concealed from anyone. The BJP betrayed those who voted them against all odds. What it did was self destructive. The BJP could not deliver the way it was expected. The people had high hopes. The BJP could not even emulate the coalition partner PDP that remained in the forefront whenever cause of Kashmir or Kashmiris, as per their perspectives, came up. This can be substantiated by the satisfaction the former Chief Minister expressed after resigning on June 19, 2018, saying the PDP had accomplished its agenda.
Now coming back to the issue with regard to withdrawal of cases registered during Amarnathji land row agitation, the BJP could not prevail upon the coalition partner to have these withdrawn when the PDP pushed for amnesty to over 9,000 stone pelters, which Mehbooba Mufti is now flaunting with pride.
Being part of the government in Srinagar and ruling the country from New Delhi, the BJP has been a pro-active partner in giving best of both the worlds to the stone pelters in terms of withdrawal of cases against them, amnesty and some sort of rehabilitation. The two governments went out of way to placate them by compromising national interest and sentiment. ‘Raise voice in revolt and get concessions’, became a norm in the Valley. They ensured a package for ‘misguided’ youth, who never felt remorse for burning and trampling national flag, raising pro-Pakistan slogans, burn schools and government property, attack security forces with stones, or create obstacles during encounters against terrorists, loot ATMs, mock at the symbols and signs of India, desecrate places of worship etc. The same BJP ignored the patriotic and peaceful protesters of Jammu, who raised Bharat Mata Ki Jai slogans and agitated over small piece of land for creating temporary facilities for Amarnathji pilgrims. And, now the BJP is shedding crocodile tears for those who are braving cases against them.
