STATE TIMES NEWSLEH: A number of religious and political leaders of Leh took out a peaceful rally from Leh Bazaar to Polo-Ground on Monday to demand constitutional safeguards for Union Territory of Ladakh. The rally was organised by Ladakh Buddhist Association (LBA) under leadership of its President P T Kunzang and was attended by the President Ladakh Gonpa Association Gelong Shatup Chamba, President BJP Leh Dorjay Angchuk, President District Congress Committee Leh Tsering Namgyal and representatives from Anjuman Moin Ul Islam, Anjuman Immamia, Christian community and others. While expressing gratitude to the Government of India for granting UT status for Ladakh, the leaders appealed to the Union Government to grant constitutional safeguards to protect interests of Ladakhis. Later, religious and political leaders met the Advisor to LG Ladakh, Umang Narula and presented a memorandum of demands addressed to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “At the outset, on behalf of tribal people of Ladakh, we the prime representatives of people of this far flung region, express our heartfelt thanks and gratitude to you for the landmark decision of granting UT status to Ladakh and fulfilling 71 years old genuine demand and other aspirations of people of Ladakh,” the memorandum read. “The scenario after the granting of Union Territory status to Ladakh, has been both joyous as well as creating doubts, apprehensions and anxiety among general public with respect to administrative arrangements and various other provisions in the Union territory Ladakh in safeguarding genuine rights and interests of people. The hopes, aspirations and apprehensions concerning various issues and strategic priorities requested herein needs to be considered and adopted in new setup of the Union Territory of Ladakh to calm and dispel doubts and concerns that are hovering around us at this point of time,” it added. The leaders demanded land protection, employment and job reservations, protection and preservation of culture, language and ethnicity of Ladakh, protection of fragile eco-system, protection of interests of business community, strengthening, empowerment/Re-organisation and delimitation of LAHDC, separate Rajya Sabha seat for Ladakh, complete tax exemption, establishment of High Court in UT Ladakh, inclusion of Bhoti language in VIII schedule of Indian Constitution, caderisation of employees, establishment of Ladakh Public Service Commission, establishment of long awaited Minority Commission, protection of citizenship of people of Ladakh and promotion of agriculture sector.
