KAKRYAL: Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital at Kakryal is now a ‘Stroke Ready Hospital’ with an interventional stroke team comprising of Dr. Ankush Sharma, Neurologist and Dr. Ujjaval Chandra Mehrotra, Interventional Cardiologist equipped to treat any stroke emergency round the clock.
One such procedure called Carotid Artery Stenting was recently performed by this team of doctors for a 65 year old female patient who was suffering from repeated stroke due to gradual decrease in blood flow to the brain through the main artery called the carotid artery.
On performing a CT angiogram and a digital subtraction angiography of the left internal carotid artery, doctors found nearly 80 to 90 per cent block at the beginning of the artery, which was near the bifurcation of the common carotid artery.
“Carotid stenting is a relatively new endovascular treatment, done through or inside the blood vessels for carotid artery disease. You might decide that carotid stenting is a better option for you because you would not need to have the incision in your neck or general anesthesia necessary. Clinical studies have shown that carotid stenting is safe and effective”, explained Dr. Ujjaval Chandra Mehrotra.
