Amid huge public pressure, lawmakers ultimately gave passage by voice vote to the Juvenile Justice Bill, amending the law to allow trying those over 16 years of age and accused of heinous crimes, as adults. The Bill had been passed by the Lok Sabha last year but due to stalling of Rajya Sabha most of the working days in two years, it could not be cleared, thus leading to release of the brutal rapist in Nirbhaya rape case from Juvenile Home and raging passions among common people against their insensitive representatives.
Is it a matter of pride or shame for such of the lawmakers who create ruckus whenever their own interests are jeopardized but need a big push by way of people taking to streets when laws to satiate mass aspirations are to be enacted?
