The seasonal migration of the State government, Darbar Move, is all set to begin and the winter capital Jammu is getting final touches as roads are getting repaired, pot holes are being filled, sign boards getting new paint with traffic police personnel trying to regulate traffic in the congested city roads to welcome the incoming crowd. No doubt the City roads will find more traffic and more jams but this time it will be a changed government with union territory status and a Lieutenant Governor at the helm of the affairs. What is to be seen will there be Dharnas and blockades which conventionally take place without any failure and no out come to the agitated ones. All these would be adding to the chaos and hardships of the road users. Government every time expresses concern over the growing traffic congestion in the capital cities of Jammu and Srinagar and was planning to have multi-lane circular roads for both the cities to ease traffic jams. On the contrary any road in Jammu, except the outer ones, has been under the onslaught of traffic jams every day especially the old narrow, congested city roads where pedestrians, stray animals and vehicles fighting for some space to move further. Government should work out in easing the traffic at these points by banning vehicular traffic in congested areas especially the matadors which are the blatant violators of all the traffic norms and making road-users life more risky. The population of vehicles has also gone up but the roads and other infrastructures have not expanded resultantly traffic jams have become regular scene not only in these two cities but in any city of the state. Even the residents of these cities too have become used to such bottlenecks. What govt should do is along with developing of these multi-lane circular roads it should divert heavy vehicle traffic like matador, trucks from city roads to outer ones which can help in decongesting them thus having less traffic jams. At ground level traffic police is a mute spectator and most of them are found at odd places during busy times. What is needed is a better traffic management with more and more people involvements especially in the face of rising cases of underage driver’s deaths. Unless and until it becomes a peoples initiative the traffic congestion are going to remain the same. Jammu has flyover but still people prefer to go through the congested areas more and the logic is simple because the route is short. Safe driving concept is a rare phenomenon to see on the Jammu roads.
