STATE TIMES NEWS JAMMU: Advocate A K Sawhney, former President of J&K High Court Bar Association Jammu paid rich tributes to Baba Saheb Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar during Ambedkar Jayanti Mela held here on Sunday. Appreciating various cultural programmes organised on the occasion, he presented a sum of Rs 10,000 to organisers as donation. Sawhney, who is also contesting elections of J&K High Court Bar Association Jammu, said that Baba Bhim Rao Ambedkar, popularly known as Babasaheb Ambedkar among people, was a jurist, economist, politician and social reformer who inspired Dalit Buddhist movement and campaigned against social discrimination, while supporting the rights for women and labour class. He was India’s first Law and Justice Minister and the Architect of Constitution of India. In India and elsewhere, he was often called Babasaheb, meaning ‘respected father’ in Marathi and Hindi. Sawhney said that Ambedkar was a prolific student, who earned doctorates in economics from both Columbia University and the London School of Economics. “Baba Saheb gained a reputation as a scholar for his research in law, economics and political science. In his early career, he was an economist, professor and lawyer. His later life was marked by political activities, as he get involved in campaigning and negotiations for India’s independence, publishing journals, advocating political rights and social freedom for Dalits, and contributing significantly for establishment of the State of India. In 1956, he adopted Buddhism, initiating a mass conversion of Dalits,” he added. In 1990, the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, was posthumously conferred upon Dr Ambedkar.
