When there is so much of ranting is on for reservation and special status, a section of youth from Haryana made the country proud by bagging maximum number of medals in the last Asian Games at Jakarta without any reservation and quota or special status. They claimed medals by sheer stint of hard work and determination. These youth majority from the economically poor section of the society had one common factor that was to excel in the field of the games they have opted. Overall sportspersons from Haryana have bagged nearly 25 per cent of the total medals. Sport is one section of the society where there is no reservation for the participants. It is perform or rot. The reservation policy which was for a short stint has continued for the last seven decades after the partition and Independence of the country. The ghost of quota hasn’t done well for the country whether socially or economically. The economic status was never disturbed nor was it removed rather politics flourished on the theme and widened the already prevailing social chasm. Even as powerful middle castes across the country agitate for reservations, some politicians have begun advocating reservations in the private sector as well. Any move that benefits this particular segment of the society might help the BJP consolidate its support base but such a move could also invite backlash from upper OBCs and powerful middle castes which are agitating currently for OBC status. Given that upper OBCs have representation through parties such as Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh, Rashtriya Janata Dal in Bihar, and Janata Dal (Secular) in Karnataka, they are less likely to shift loyalties. Hence, the BJP is trying to consolidate support among lower OBCs in these states with the narrative that regional parties have restricted wider diffusion of the benefits granted to OBCs by the state. The policy of reservation propagated during the time of independence with the view to end discrimination and promote equal opportunities has cost the nation hugely.
