STATE TIMES NEWSREASI: The ambitious ‘One Adult One Percolation Pit’ initiative of district administration Reasi kicked off today with great zeal. The inaugural pit was dug by Deputy Commissioner, Indu Kanwal Chib here at panchayat Aghar Balliyan of block Reasi. She also planted a tree at the location. Under the ten-day OAOP initiative, percolation pits, measuring 3x3x2.5 feet, are to be dug at in each panchayat of the district in addition to other pits dug by district officers, students and other residents of the district. According to ACD Reasi, Sunil Sharma, more than 14000 pits would be dug in all the panchayats of the district. In subsequent days, existing ponds will be cleaned and renovated and new ponds will be constructed. In addition to pits, vegetative check dams and pine needle check dams will also be created to arrest free flow of water. The initiative has been drawing applause from all over the country. Addressing the villagers, the DC said that rain water needs to be harvested on war footing to prevent imminent drought in near future. She said that ‘successful completion of the initiative would lead to saving of more than 1.5 crore litres of rainwater that would otherwise run off and be wasted’. Later she visited village Chappra of panchayat Bhaga and inspected pit-digging at the village. She also planted a tree in the village.
