STATE TIMES NEWSLEH: District Congress Committee (DCC) Leh celebrated the achievements of former Union Minister and three-time Member Parliament P. Namgyal on the occasion of his 85th Birthday on Saturday at Leh. On his birthday, Congress party wished him a good health, peace of mind and happiness in his life and prayed that the tallest leader of the party lives long and continues to bless the people of Ladakh. The special celebration was held at DCC Office Leh under the Chairmanship of DCC President T. Namgyal and was attended by sitting Councilors, former MLA Deldan Namgyal, former MLC Nurbu Gyaltsen, former CEC Rigzin Spalbar, MCL President Dr Namgyal Gangjor, MCL Ward Members, former Executive Councillors Mohd Shafi Lasu, Ghulam Abbas Abidi, and Sonam Dorjey Sercho besides DCC Senior Members, BCC Nubra President Stobdan Goba, Youth Congress Executive members, Sewa Dal Chairman Vir Chakra Capt Tsepel, and Women Wing members.“P Namgyal has been one of the pillars of Congress Party in Ladakh ever since he became a members of INC in 1969 and since then has played a very pivotal role in strengthening Congress Party in Ladakh. His first major position came as Member of Legislative Council J&K which he served for three tenures. Between 1980 to 1989, P Namgyal was elected two times Member Parliament to 7th and 8th Lok Sabha and again in 1996 was elected for the 11th Lok Sabha. During his three-time MP tenure Namgyal took charge as one of the Union Minister under Prime Ministership of late Rajiv Gandhi and was given the portfolio of Surface Transport and Petro Chemicals,” an official release issued by DCC Leh reads. “Among the many contributions of P Namgyal were the grant of ST status for Ladakh region in which Namgyal played a role of a propeller”, it said.
