Monkeys are slowly occupying Bahu Fort, Bagh-e-Bahu Garden, Aquarium Park and Bawe Walli Mata Temple forcing the visitors to skip their visit.
Monkeys are taking over Bagh-e-Bahu Garden keeping many visitors away from the place. Situated on the banks of the river Tawi, the garden has a beautiful landscape. The terraced garden developed around the ancient Bahu Fort attracts a large number of tourists every day, particularly in the winters and evening hours in the summer.
Encroachment of their natural habitat by humans and construction of the national highway close to the area can be termed as one of the reason for their shifting towards the residential areas. The monkeys have become a threat and pounce upon the visitors carrying eatables with them. The monkeys have virtually taken over the play area for children and can be seen enjoying on the slides themselves.
Monkeys have become a threat at the Bahu Fort. They are not even scared of people carrying a stick and can attack at any time. Last week I had a close shave, as a monkey attacked me when I was on my way to the temple. He snatched my offering bag and ran away. It is really sad that the visitors are becoming victim and concerned authorities are watching like a mute spectator.
It is very unfortunate that monkey menace is affecting the number of visitors coming there. It is a famous pilgrimage tourist spot and has a huge potential to attract tourists but this growing monkey menace is a hindrance in the path. I think government should pay prior attention and develop this place. As a stop gap measure, it should catch them and take to the jungles.
