STATE TIMES NEWSSAMBA: It was lethargy and mismanagement on the part of Samba Police that Saturday evening saw this year’s worst ever traffic jam near Bari Brahmana on Jammu–Pathankot National Highway for over four hours during which even pedestrians find it difficult to move around as vehicles in bid to get rid of snarling traffic stuck very close to each other. According to commuters, who were stuck in the traffic jam, the Samba cops were indifferent towards their woes and never bothered to streamline the traffic which led to choking of both the tubes of NH 44 for about four hours. “Had Samba policemen intervened on time and extended help for regulating traffic, the scene would have been different and people would not have to face such a misery”, they added. Traffic scenario in Samba’s Bari Brahmana area deteriorated due to protest staged by family members of an under-trial prisoner, who died on Friday during treatment at GMC&H, Jammu. Because of poor source inputs, Samba police had no clue that the family members of deceased under-trial are going to block the National Highway. The Samba police responded after one hour of the protest, which led to total chaos on highway. “Had Samba police acted on time, this jam could have been averted,” said residents of Bari Brahmana. The enraged family members of deceased under-trial of Hiranagar jail blocked the ever busy Jammu-Pathankot National Highway near Bari Brahmana seeking fair probe in the matter. According to report, 40-year-old Khuda Bakash, resident of Samba, who was arrested in a drug-related case about three months ago, died during treatment at hospital here on Friday, officials said.
Khuda Bakash was shifted to Government Medical College (GMC) Hospital after he complained of severe chest pain, they said. He was lodged in Kathua’s Hiranagar jail, the officials said. His post-mortem was conducted on Saturday, they said.
According to the officials, after the news of Bakash’s death reached his family members on Saturday, they staged protest near Bari Brahmana and demanded probe. They even placed the body on road and started protesting. Later, senior police and civil officers were rushed to Bari Brahmana from Jammu to pacify the protesters.
