JAMMU: In its exalted enthusiasm of hogging headlines in the mistaken belief of winning back the disillusioned and disenchanted people of their core constituency of Jammu, the BJP is conveniently forgetting that it is on the driver’s seat in the government with PDP, and not in the opposition. The six-decade syndrome is overpowering Jammu BJP’s psyche. Coupled with this and the fact of virtually being redundant in the coalition government, the BJP is conducting itself in a very awkward manner. In the process, the credibility of the BJP is taking nose dive.
Reacting to STATE TIMES expose on unprecedented haste being demonstrated by the Jammu and Kashmir Government in allotting 50 Kanals prime land in Srinagar for laying an Eidgah, the Jammu BJP is brooding while saying, “We are opposed to any such move”. Somewhere in this assertion the BJP does not only provide a shield to the Chief Minister at whose behest the Divisional Administration, Kashmir showed usual priority to seek a report from Deputy Commissioner, Srinagar over the plea of Jamait AhileHadees. In support of its move to oppose, the BJP has come out with an argument that “AhileHadees is responsible for easing out of Sufi Islam from Kashmir and for spreading radical Wahaabi Islam. It is funded illegally through petro-dollars from Saudi Arabia and is a Sunni sectarian organisation. It is also alleged to have links with ISI of Pakistan and suspected to provide shelter to Pakistani terrorists”. This is very serious accusation that should normally have compelled the BJP to work towards banning of AhileHadees instead of being partner in dolling out a reward.
The Jammu BJP Spokesperson Brig (Retd) Anil Gupta goes on saying, “Scarcely visible a decade and a half ago, AhileHadees now has over 25 lakh members, over 20 per cent of Jammu and Kashmir’s Muslims. Besides the 700 mosques and madrassas it built, AhileHadees is believed to have funded 150 schools, several colleges, orphanages, clinics and medical diagnostic centres according to available data. It had also proposed a Rs 200-crore Islamic university, Transworld Muslim University (TWMU), in Hyderpora, Srinagar, affiliated to leading Saudi institutions.” This being so, questions can be asked as to what the Jammu BJP is doing in the government? They are not there to enjoy the loaves of power, show-off the status of moving around two-flagged cars (much against the dream of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, who had envisioned ‘Ek Vidhan, Ek Nishan, Ek Pradhan in Jammu). Being a responsible and equal partner in the government, the BJP ought to have set in motion high level probe into the ‘sordid’ affairs of the AhileHadees, which as per its version is eating up the vitals of the State. Such organisations are required to be put on scanner and banned at the strength of the evidence.
“Salafi Wahhabis are known to espouse violent jihad against civilians as a legitimate method to enforce their puritanical version of Islamic Shariah and Khilafah. The recent killings in Kashmir are a witness to manifestation of this ideology. How can an organisation like JamaitAhileHadees be patronised by government when it is known to divide the society than unite it?” This is what the BJP is asking instead of acting. This is bizarre.
Ironically, the Jammu BJP is raking up the issues that are creation of its own follies. Should a partner in the government cry hoarse over denial of land by its own Srinagar District Administration for developing a Sainik Colony, which in any case would have been rehabilitated by the ex-servicemen Muslims of the Valley?
The BJP needs to do some sort of soul searching. While doing so, the Jammu BJP must remember the all-season quote of Abraham Lincoln, reading, “You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time.” By trying to hoodwink the public opinion, the BJP is committing the biggest mistake of undermining the sagacity of Jammu people, who had consciously voted it in unpredicted strength. In turn what they got, misgovernance, false promises and added dose of discrimination for which they have been fighting for the past nearly seven decades. They had never ever thought even in their wildest of dreams the BJP to play the worst ever role of second fiddlers to Kashmiri masters. By indulging in double speak and deceit, the Jammu BJP is hugely weakening the stature of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
