The decision by a Pakistan Court to release Zaki-ur-Rahman mastermind behind 26/11 Mumbai attack, from preventive custody comes days after America enthusiastically cleared $1 billion-weapons deal for Pakistan to ostensibly fight terrorists. Lakhvi may have been in custody for the past six years but it has not come in his operational freedom. Even in detention he continued to lead Lashkar (LeT) and fathered a child. India had expressed its concern over the release of Lakhvi and even US State Department too came out with a statement expressing concern which looks as if a cosmetic one and just extending lip sympathy to India. The release is setback in the war against terror globally. During the Mumbai attack it was not only Indians, but a large number of Americans and Israelis figured in casualty list. The attack also targeted a Jewish centre-Nariman House in which six people including a rabbi and his wife were killed. The proposed US arms sale will contribute to the foreign and national polices of the US by helping and improving the security of the country. In recent times America has emerged largest arms suppliers to India and recent arms sale to Pakistan no doubt would alter the military balance in the region. America believes the arms deal will give Pakistan the strategic edge to counter terrorism in Waziristan and Federally Administrated Tribal Areas (FATA) and enhanced survivability aircraft that it can operate at high altitudes. Many of the arms makers are constituents of US lawmakers who prize creation of jobs and maintaining it in the district above all so the sincerity of the deal remains doubtful and Americans are expert in playing cover up game. India has experienced this many times during 60s and 70s. For Americans Pakistan is an important allay in the region and would go to any extent to keep it happy. India’s fear is what guarantees that Pakistan will not use this beefed up equipment in supporting terrorism against India and test India’s patience?
