State Times News SAMBA: To update the knowledge of line officers of the district Samba, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Samba of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and technology, Jammu on Monday conducted one day in-service training programme on “Inter-space utilization of existing orchards through agroforestry measures”. The programme was conducted under the directions of Dr. K.S. Risam, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, SKUAST-Jammu. The programme was attended by about 20 officials/officers of department of agriculture and horticulture of district Samba and coordinated by Dr. Sanjay Khajuria. The programme was started with the introduction of Krishi Vigyan Kendra Samba by Dr. Sanjay Khajuria, in which he discussed in detail about the various agroforestry measures going on in the district for the promotion of agroforestry. In his technical address, he discussed in detail about the utilization of interspaces in the orchards through field crops especially legumes, fodder crops, medicinal and aromatic plants for getting extra revenue. He stressed upon the officers for making a mass movement in the district for using the available waste land in the various orchards through the agroforestry techniques so that farmers will not only get the extra income but can also be able to maintain the ecology of the district. Dr. Neerja Sharma, Scientist, Horticulture discussed in details about the horticulture waste agroforestry based systems for generating income from the available resources. Dr. A.K. Sinha, Scientist, Agricultural Engineering laid stress on role of mechanisation in improving the hill based agroforestry systems especially through power tiller. Dr. Saurav Gupta, Entomologist strongly advocated the bee-keeping based agroforestry system in the district. This will not only we increase the production but also helps in production of quality seeds/fruits. Dr. Suraj Amrutkar, Scientist, Animal Science discussed in detail about the role and scope of backyard poultry based agroforestry system in the district. He also told about the rearing practices of Vanraja and Chabro breeds of poultry. Dr. Amit Mahajan threw light on the management of various Rabi crop weeds. At the end of programme, the formal vote of thanks was presented by Dr. Shalini.
