STATE TIMES NEWS REASI: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu (SKUAST-J) organised an awareness-cum-training programme on Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers Right Act (PPV&FRA) on Wednesday at KVK, Reasi campus which was attended by a large number of farmers of the area. The programme was inaugurated by I/C, Sr.Scientist-cum-Head of KVK, Reasi, Dr.Banarsi Lal. In the inaugural session he welcomed the participants and gave a detailed view on protection of plant varieties and farmers right act,2001. Dr.Sanjay Kaushal, scientist said the farmers that the crop varieties to be registered should have some distinctive characters. He motivated the farmers for the registration of their traditional varieties and said that the farmers who conserve their local varieties through selection and preservation shall be entitled for the recognition and awards and are eligible for the registration under PPV&FRA Act,2001. Dr.Suja Nabi Qureshi, scientist spoke on the status of plant varieties and their registration by the farmers. He said that in order to accelerate agricultural development, it is necessary to protect the farmers’ rights. Dr.Arvinder Kumar stressed on the documentation of the local varieties practised by the farmers. He also suggested the farmers that they should take technical guidelines from KVK experts. In this programme Zarina Firoz, Sarpanch, Sham Lal, Ex-Sarpanch, Gopal Singh, Naib Sarpanch and many Panchs of the area were also present. Farmers also visited the crop cafeteria, farm, poultry unit, mushroom unit, mango orchard etc. of KVK, Reasi and were highly impressed by observing the results. An exhibition stall depicting the crops technologies was also established for the farmers. KVK scientists appreciated the samples of crops varieties brought by the farmers. The programme was assisted by Sh.Manohar Lal concluded by Dr. Suja Nabi Qureshi with the formal vote of thanks.
