JAMMU: Keeping up with the practice of holding Consultative Committee meetings in different parts of the country, Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh convened a meeting of the Consultative Committee for Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER).
In addition to other issues discussed during the meeting, the main focus of the meeting revolved around issues related to North Eastern Handicrafts and Handloom Development Corporation (NEHHDC), livelihood schemes being implemented by the Ministry of Northeast (DoNER) and several innovative schemes initiated by the North Eastern Council (NEC).
Briefing media persons after the meeting, Dr Jitendra Singh said, one of the purposes of holding such Consultative meetings about Northeast in different locations like Jammu is to enable the officials and elected representatives associated with the Committee to tell the rest of India, what all path-breaking and unique initiatives have been undertaken by the Modi government for the development of Northeast in a brief span of just four years. While this enables the members of the Consultative Committee to acquaint themselves with developmental activities of the host State like Jammu & Kashmir, it is also an opportunity for the host State to pick up some valuable cues about the good practices put into effect by the DoNER Ministry in the Northeast.
Dr Jitendra Singh said, soon after the Modi Government took over on May 26, 2014, one of the earliest declarations made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi was that he wanted to bring the peripheral States, like Northeast and Jammu & Kashmir at par with the other more developed States of the country.
When this government took over in 2014, Dr Jitendra Singh said, there were at least two States, namely Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh, which had never seen a train, whereas today, there is a double – gauge rail-track being laid in all the States except Sikkim and the first-ever train to Bangladesh is going to take off from Agartala in Tripura. Similarly, there were hardly any Airports besides Guwahati, whereas today, there is a direct air link to virtually every State of Northeast and new airports are coming up in each State capital, which includes Sikkim, which has been gifted with the first-ever airport after nearly 40 years since it became a part of India. Not only this, he said, Northeast is the only region in the country for which the Centre has formulated the first-ever Regional Road Corporation in the form of “North-East Road Development Scheme”.
For encouraging the youth from all over India to come and set up their entrepreneurship in the Northeast, Dr Jitendra Singh said, the Ministry of Northeast (DoNER) has introduced the incentive of venture / capital fund for young Startups so that they do not face any financial difficulty.
