JAMMU: The North-Pole, South-Pole era is over in Jammu and Kashmir. BJP has finally pulled the rug under the chair of Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and called a day to the ‘unholy alliance’. With cushion of power gone, it is time for Jammu BJP to introspect what it gained and what it lost during the past nearly four years of being part of the government, first time in the past seven decades.
Despite pulling out of the government, the Jammu BJP has been deprived of the luxury to celebrate the exit. It can’t any more take high moral grandstanding of claiming to have sacrificed the power for national interest. It is too late. Kashmir has almost slipped away of India’s control with ultras calling the shots and young people humiliating, thrashing, abducting and killing armed and security forces in full public gaze. It is cumulative outcome of the policy of appeasement and obnoxious mindset of winning over so-called hearts and minds. What is happening in the Valley had never happened before the current aborted spell of the Coalition Government. The army and the security forces had a definite edge over terrorists and control over the situation. However, all this perished due to suicidal policies pursued by the BJP.
True, the nation has no alternative but for Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the given dicey political scenario across the country but he too will have to share the blame of committing blunders by offering olive branch to chronic anti-national elements in the Valley. Narendra Modi jumped the red line on 8th December 2014, during the height of BJP campaign for elections to Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, by flaunting, “For the first time in 30 years, it is the Modi government’s magic, that the army admitted at a press conference that the killing of two youth was a mistake. An inquiry commission probed the matter and those who fired the bullets were charged. This is proof of my good intentions.” Clad in Kashmiri Pheran, he was addressing an election rally in Srinagar and referring to the killing of two teenagers at a Naka in Budgam District. Every compatriot was shocked over belittling of India’s valiant Army by the strongest ever Prime Minister. Modi too failed in gauging the Kashmir psyche and this had a very negative impact on the Jammu BJP, which eventually kneeled before the PDP though asked only to bend after joining the government.
The Jammu BJP played the worst ever second-fiddle role while partnering the government with the PDP. It compromised on fundamentals of the BJP ethos; it betrayed its core constituency on all the fronts; it became a partner in inflicting discrimination with the already discriminated Jammu; it bartered the honour and dignity of Dogras for few loaves of power; it ditched its own electors in order to placate ‘masters’ in Srinagar; it preferred silence when sovereignty and integrity of Mother India was challenged; it did all that the PDP wanted it to do.
Now, with the government gone, how would the BJP lot face its own people in Jammu? Can they muster strength and guts to say what they used to prior to 2014 elections? Will they be able to see into the eyes of deprived and betrayed people of the Jammu region?
Obviously, the answer will be in negative because the Jammu BJP turned out to be lame duck lot of opportunists and apologists. They will be remembered the most incompetent lot Jammu has ever mandated to govern the State.
On the contrary, PDP will return back to its core constituency with all that Mehbooba Mufti said in her press conference after putting in papers as Chief Minister. She said PDP has accomplished its agenda-making Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit Lahore impromptu to talk peace with his Pakistan counterpart Nawaz Sharif, forcing the BJP to put Article 370 into back-burner and ensure protection of Article 35A of the Constitution of India, granting State Subject rights to people of the State, compelling the Centre to announce unilateral ceasefire during Ramzan, taking Rassana rape and murder case to logical conclusion by strengthening the conspiracy angle and not agreeing to CBI probe and more importantly seeking cases against 11,000 stone-pelters withdrawn. All these misadventures would have not succeeded, had the Jammu BJP put its foot down as a self-respecting lot from the Duggarland and not as lame duck bunch of cowards, who wanted nothing but to remain glued to power. They will have to come up with answers.
