STATE TIMES NEWSUDHAMPUR: Tension gripped Udhampur town on Sunday when two families had an altercation over the issue of carrying out last rites of a man who had married a woman belonging to another religion. According to report, one of the spouses (husband), who had tied an inter-faith marriage knot about 14 years back, died natural death and subsequently, the people from both the communities started mounting pressure to carry out his last rites as stipulated in their religions. Deceased Subash Chander, son of Labu Ram, resident of village Dhanal, Jaganoo, who had solemnized marriage with Rukhsar Akhtar 14 years back expired on Sunday after brief illness. He was declared as brought dead by the doctors at District Hospital Udhampur. Soon after the families of Subash and his wife got the news of his death, tension erupted as both the families insisted on performing last rites as per the rituals of their faiths. Receiving the information, a police party led by concerned SHO and Dy. SP (HQ) Rohit Chadgal along with additional para-military forces reached the hospital to ensure that the issue doesn’t flare up.
The stand-off continued till the last report came in despite intervention of Additional Deputy Commissioner.
Meanwhile, police has shifted the body to mortuary of District Hospital.
Sources said that families might approach the court tomorrow to take possession of body and for a final call on carrying out last rites.
