This letter is regarding the recent media reports wherein the Commonwealth Gold Medalist Manu Bhaker was made to sit on the floor during a felicitation ceremony in Haryana. The 16 year-old prodigy is a serious contender for the future Olympic medal. It’s important that proper nurturing of such raw talent be done. It’s also high time that we realize the importance of the sports as an alternative career.
Along with the state, it’s also the responsibility of the society to appreciate and acknowledge the importance of sports as a full-fledged career. It is pertinent to mention that Australia, whose population is 1/10 of the population of Uttar Pradesh, won a staggering 198 medals at the recently concluded Commonwealth Games in Australia, while India’s tally was at 66.
It’s time we start changing our mindset and begin to appreciate sports other than cricket. Our athletes need our support and motivation to make India proud at the global arena and we shouldn’t disappoint them.
